CHAP II. PLOT IN TO THE LIGHTHOUSE

II.O. INTRODUCTION

This chapter is focalized on plot in To the Light house. It intends to study the pattern of causally related events that generate conflicts in To the Light house. It submits to the pyramide of Frey tag which refers to the study of plot to a diagram describing typical five steps which are adapted to apply to this work of fiction. In the following lines the narrative succession of events is tackled in terms of the conflicts in cuhich the main character James Ramsay is involved throughout whole narrative.

Those conflicts evolve into five steps which are: unstable situation rising action, climax, falling action and stable situation.

II.1. UNSTABLE SITUATION

In To the Lighthouse, the story focuses on James Ramsay, young man of around twelve years old, very courageous      and ambitious to discover their former dwelling place called the Lighthouse. James imposes his mother and sister to leave their dwelling place of Hampton court Road in Lond in order to go and visit the Lighthouse, the former property of this father.

Indeed, after James Ramsay knowing thee life difficulties which do not allow him and his family to progress comfortably due to bad living conditions; he decided, and convinces his mother and sister to go to the Lighthouse.

The fact of going there James thought that it could be the opportunity of hiving happiness and prosperity. But unfortunately, on the departure Mr. Ramsay contradicted their decision of going to the Light house expecting that should be some bad weather that could not allow them to travel peace fully.

The above situation creates an internal conflict to James. That is, James finds himself shocked by the speeches of his father since the father prevents him about the dangerous way they want to face. That is why for James visiting the Lighthouse is for him a must.

The narrator reports as follows:

Had there been an axe handy, a pocker or any

weapon that would have gashed a whole in his

fatheer’s breast and killed him, there and then

James would have seized it. Those were

the extremes of emotion that Ramsay excited

in his children’s breasts by his mere presence.

                        (To the Lighthouse, P.6).

As a resolution made up on the above conflict, James decides to go despite the shortcomings on his way to the Lighthouse.

After having decided that, one day, he, with his family went to the Lighthouse. They went through the sea during summer period.

                     II.2. RISING ACTION

As soon as James Ramsay contraducted his family to go to the Lighthouse, he gets into conflict with Mr. Tansley, whom James considered as a faithful friend to his father, Ramsay. James Ramsay thinks as Mr. Tansley is a friend to his father he can persuade Mr. Ramsay to let free go to the Lighthouse.

Unfortunately, Tansley discouraged James Ramsay to travel there accros through the windy sea pretending that the journey would be bad as Ramsay has also prohibited his son before about going to the Lighthouse. This creates a misunderstanding between James and his father.

The narrator reports:

Tansley holding his fingers so that wind

                        blew through them, for

he was sharing Mr. Ramsay’s evening walk up

and down, up and down the terrace. That is to

say the wind blew from the possible direction

for landing at the Lighthouse. Yes, he did say

disagreeable things Mr. Ramsay admitted. It was

odious of him to rub this in, and makes James

                        still more disappointed .

The above conflict is represented as follows.

The resolution made up on the conflict, James Ramsay gets courage to come back home and solicit his mother for convincing his father about the journey to the Lighthouse.

After returning home, James went to see his mother and reported what he told to Mr. Tansley in order to convince his father, but Mr. Tansley rejected that idea of consulting Mr. Ramsay.

Moreover, James Ramsay has continued to collaborate with his mother to persuade her husband to agree with James to go to the Lighthouse but his mother refused to convince her husband about the journey of James to the Lighthouse the following day. This hesitation makers James to expect that his mother hates him.

The narrator reported:

She could not help laughing herself sometimes.

She said, the other day something about Waves,

mountain high. Aren’t you drenched to the skin?

She had said. Damp, wet through the sea, but it is

not the day of journey boy!

Having tried to persuade vainly his father in order to be allowed to make a journey, James becomes upset and gets into conflict with to deny his idea for going to the Lighthouse the following day. As was his decision, James tries to persuade his father for the advantages of his family by showing that the present living life has some characters stics mong which suffering illness and poverty. These problems have disturbed him and pushed him to settle to the Lighthouse where he expects good life conditions, happiness and prosperity.

However, despite the discussion and explanation that James Ramsay has engaged with his father, it was vainly done. The narrator asserts:

Hating his father, James brushed away the

tickling spray with which in a manner peculiar to

him, compound of severity and humour…There

won’t be the slightest chance that they could go to

As the resolution made up on this problem, James decides to hate his father and keeps silence to word him because he does not get satisfaction on his request.

After adopting to such behaviour, James has compared the former time present and notices how much Ramsay does not care about his request, James Ramsay and his mother need sympathy that can allow them to live harmonious life. Because of that, there is misunderstanding between Mr. Ramsay and his family. This conflict is shown through the following passage:

(Who will not secretely rejoice when hero)

His son hated him. He hated him for coming up

to them for stopping and looking down up to

them, he hated him in silence for interrupting

them, he hated him for exaltation and sublimity

of his head and egotism, for there he stood

commanding them. He wondered much in

            calmeness.

In order to solve this conflict, Mr. Ramsay agrees to answer to the need of his family. He establishes harmony and they reconcile again. After the Ramsay have reconciled, Mr. Ramsay gets into conflict with Augustus Carmichael about intolerance. All of them were invited to partake the party for enjoyment; every one of them takes a plate of food. Mr. Augustus Carmichael was the first to finish and he asked for a second plate of food.

Mr. Ramsay did not tolerate seeing Mr. Augustus eat much.

That day Augustus was astonished in front guests.

Mr. Ramsay reconciled other persons except Augustus.

The narrator reports:

But why after all should poor Augustus not

ask for another plate of soup? He had merely

                         teached Ellen’s arm and said:

“Ellen, please, another plate of soup”

and then Mr. Ramsay Scowled like that.

After Mrs. Ramsay has reconciled Augustus and her husband; Mr. Ramsay gets into conflict with his wife about the way of solving their conflict. Mr. Ramsay becomes upset and goes to the veranda to stay there alone. The fact of being alone and wondering about what happened, make Mrs. Ramsay feel unsympathetic in front her husband, then she goes towards her husband and apologized herself to him about herself intrusion into the problem between Augustus and Ramsay; but after being sympathized Mr. Ramsay wants his wife to pronounce the word that she loves him.

This word seems very difficult  for her to pronounce it publicly, afterwards mrs Ramsay accepts that she loves him and they shook their hands, and begin some comfortable life. the narrator asserts:

And why? Mrs Ramsey demanded surely the could let Augustus have his soup-if the wanted it. Hated people wallowing in food, Mr Ramsey frowned at her. He hated everything dragging on for hours like this. But he had controlled himself, Mr Ramsey would have her observe, disgusting though the sight was. But why show it plainly, Mrs. Ramsey demanded(they tooked at each other down the long table sending these questions and answers across, each  knowing exactly what the other felt)

                                   ( to the lighthouse, pp.110-11)

The conflict is diagrammed as follows:

As resolution, Mr Ramsay is sympathized a nd stops blaming his wife because of here self intrusion in private affair.

II.3. CLIMAX

After Mrs. Ramsay has got into good temper, he goes on living in good terms with his wife and children, but after the war has broken out, Mrs. Ramsay gets into conflict with himself about the death of his wife, two children Andrew and Prue and his sailor Macalister, the fisherman and good at sailing, then Mr. Ramsay was disappointed and troubled by those deaths.

It is the time when he feels that living is more meaningless for him and he goes on thinking one what to do as he lives lonely and helplessly.

The narrator reports:

Almost it would appear that it is useless in such confusion to ask the night those  questions as to what, and why, and wherefore, which tempt the sleeper from his bed to seek an answer. Mr. Ramsey stumbling along a passage stretched his arms out one dark morning, but, Mrs. Ramsay having died rather. Suddenly the night before, he stretched his arms out.

They remained empty. A shell exploded. Twenty or thirty Youngman were blown up in France, among them Andrew Ramsay, whose death, mercifully, whose instantaneous. Rue Ramsay died that summer…

                                   ( to the lighthouse,pp. 146-152)

The conflict is represented as follows:

The resolution made up one the conflict is found when Mr Ramsay and his remained children and other   persons who came with him stay together for consolation. After  this fact of being with those persons, Mr Ramsay asks Lily take the charge that had Mrs Ramsay and till James Ramsay and the expedition were sailing over the sear in order to reach the lighthouse.

Besides,  James Ramsay and his expedition have found a lot of difficulties a long the sea wich  could not along theme to go farther, but according to their decision they reached the middle of the sea after struggling so much against those difficulties such as the storm and hard wind over the sea, James get into conflict with himself and became discouraged and hopeless due to those storm and hard wind over the sea, moreover, cam has not assisted James to over come that matter because he has been afraid of the death, James remembered the prohibition of his father of going to the lighthouse. That creates an internal conflict to Jams about loneliness and hopeless.

The narrator asserts:

I shall be left to fight the tyranny alone. Come would never resist against tyranny                     the dearth, he thought grimly, watching her face, ghtad, sulky, yielding…so, cam now felt        over cast, as he sat there among calm.

              (To the lighthouse, p.191)

The conflict is represented as follows:

As the resolution to this conflict, James has been consoled by himself and continued travelling over the sea, he decides to go head until the end of the expedition despite his solitude.

II.4 FALLING ACTION

After  having been consoled  by himself ,he became more courageous,he has fate  and is doomed to reach the lighthouse. That is,he gets strength to travelling over the windy sea with his expedition when the wind and the storm attack them.Despite the windy sea,Jams made hopeful and trustful the expediton which has has been discouraged by the tyranny of winds.

Nobody could help him as his father has forbidden him before about idea of travelling over the windy sea.

In addition,James prayed in order to be protected from that windy sea,as soon as he gets a conflict with his father who has not been active  while travelling over the windy sea.

He became angry and  so chocked by his father who did not help him at the time while of fighting against the storm and hard wind from the sea. That that fact creates another conflict to Jams between him and his father about the inactiveness of the father to fight with James, but last his father praized him.

            The narrator assert:

He looked at attentively,he made, perhaps, some, some mathematical calculation. At last he said, triumphantly:

Well down James had steered them like a born sailor.Ther cam thought, addressing herself  silently to James you’ve got it at last. For she knew that now he had got it.

He had been wanting, and she know that now he had got it.

He was  so pleased that he would not look at her or at his father or at any one. There he sat with his hand on the tiller sitting bolt upright,

                                   (To the lighthouse, PP.234-235)

The conflict is represented as follows:

Page21DESSIN

The resolution to this conflict between James and his father is mad up when James decided to keep silence in front of this father. He does so, while travelling. When he finally realizes that the father behaves in such a way as facts of the nature.

Having given a silence to the inactiveness of his father, James expects the future and arrives at the lighthouse as it was his particular aim. As soon as he as seen it, he gets satisfaction of having reached the lighthouse. He no longer things about all those difficulties during the travelling over the windy sea.

Indeed, along all the travel, Mr Ramsay has not expressed his thanks to Jams. He later expresses it but with bad temper. For James, it is a great joy for him to have arrived to the lighthouse, James shares some sandwiches with his father but it was hypocritically as he has not assisted him during the journey, james becomes astonished when he sees his father eating with other old men and praising him as someone has assisted his own son during sea.

The narrator asserts:

But his father never prized him, James thought grimly.Mr Ramsay opened the parcel and shared.

Out the sandwiches among them. Now he was happy, eating bread and cheese with these fishermen. he would have like in a cottage and louage about in the harbor spitting with the other old men; James thought.

                        (To the lighthouse, p.232)

The above fact creates an inner conflict to James about the generosity of his father on showing sandwiches with other men as if he deserves as a right responsible.                                           The conflict is represented as follows:

p22

The resolution to this conflict, James agrees with the praise of his father in front him and decides to share food and collaborate with him.

II.5 STABLE SITUATION

After having agreed with the admiration of the father in front him and deciding to share food and collaborating with him, James remembers again how his father prohibited him for going to the lighthouse.

Where he expected having comfortable life, but James did not lose courage and hope, reason why the reached the lighthouse.

Anyway, he has met people to the lighthouse and other members of the expedition, he shows his satisfaction and joy of having reached the lighthouse for him, which has been his aim; also members of the expedition admire James Ramsay for his courage and the decision taken for the journey to the lighthouse.

            The narrator reporters:

Now they could see two mean on the lighthouse watching them and making ready to meet theme. What do you want?.  The both wanted to ask. They both wanted to stay.  Ask us whatever… and we will give.                                            But he did not ask theme anything. He sat and looked at the bland, and he might be thinking, I have reached it.

                                   (To the lighthouse, p235)

p23

in  sum, James Ramsay has reached  the lighthouse  which was for him a place where life is more comfortable than the place they left because of bad conditions of life.
