0.GENERAL INTRODUCTION

  • PRESENTATION OF THE TOPIC

Literature is a wide field. That is as too many aspects for research. It has not only romance, poetry but also biography and other aspects that can be studied in different manners in case they are taken into account.

Owing to that, I limited my choice to two aspects of literature, which are “plot and characterization” in Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse.

Indeed, to understand a piece of fiction the reader grasping plot, that is the   succession of the different events that the novel develops and the different characters on people who perform or produce those events. It implies that plot and characterization are two techniques which   together in literature because they help the reader in providing him with much information in order to get the narrative fiction message.

  • INTEREST OF THE TOPIC;

I have chosen this topic for several reasons among which the first one was to enjoy the pleasure that fiction provides through the succession of events. Also? I was interesting in penetrating how conflicts created by characters are involved.

This manner of resolving conflicts can be compared to that of resolving them in real world.

And I was interested in the way narrative the characters act, react, interact in a narrative and how it interests any reader who feels curious to understand how people from fictional world look like real ones.

  • BACK GROUND TO THE STUDY

The narrative story in to the lighthouse by Virginia Woolf attracted me thanks to the way the narrator arranges series and events in the novel as well as the way the characters act, interact according.

  • PROBLEME STATEMENT

The problem I entend to investigate one is to know why do the characters act, react differently while they are conceived by the same narrator and live in the some society. Also, I need to know what result from the behavior, action, reaction of the characters.

  • RESEARCH QUESTION
  • What are the motif which influences James Ramsey, his mother and sister to leave their home of Hampton court road in London for their former habitation?
  • What does result from action, reaction and interactions of the characters?

0.6 HYPOTHESIS

  • The motifs which influence James Ramsey, his mother and sister to leave their home of Hampton court road in London are hard and miserable life conditions that he and his family were living.
  • The action, reaction and interaction as well as the setting create conflicts between themselves though the live in the same community.

0.7RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In this study, I will apply the textual approach. This consists of concentrating oneself on the close reading of the novel up to the time the message is understood. This implies the technique of reading and interpretation of the novel will be applied.

In addition to that, internet tools will be used, read other books and theses related to my topic in order to know how to deal with plot and characterization in to the lighthouse.  I will also use documentary research. It consists of reading other books and documents about the topic under story.

0.8SCOPE OF THE STUDY
